Stem Cell Therapy Makes Progress

The Macular Society has reported that a study currently underway in the United States has produced positive early results in the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Researchers conducting the study suggest this demonstrates the condition may be reversed.


Lineage Cell Theraputics Inc has implanted retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells drived from stem cells under the retinas of patients with advanced dry AMD, with "substantial restoration of retinal tissue" reported nine months after the procedure. The implant was also found to slow the growth of damage at other points on the retina.
