Fight for Sight, the UK's largest charity funding critical eye research, has launced an appeal for donations amid the covid-19 crisis.
The charity reports that ninety percent of the researchers who took part in a recent survey had suspended their work due to the closure of labs and redeployment to the NHS frontline during the coronavirus outbreak.
In order for crucial treatments to be developed - many of which were close to being discovered, the charity reports - £15,000 a week needs to be raised to help get researchers back in the lab, cover salaries, support cell cultures and mini-retinas. As a result of the pandemic, many of these consumables, which can take up to six months to grow, may have been lost as they cannot be frozen or maintained.
These treatments may be life-changing for a range of eye diseases, and so it is absolutely crucial that work is continued in a timely manner, as it may benefit many patients with vision loss.
